Have you passed your Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean, are you wanting to work in the marine industry? Then maybe the MCA Master 200 is the route for you, the full title of the course is “STCW Master (Code vessels less than 200gt) / Officer of the Watch (Yachts less than 500gt)”.

There are two levels of MCA Master 200, the limited qualification that limits you to 150nm from a Safe Haven or the unlimited qualification which allows you to operate globally. The Master 200 unlimited requires Yachtmaster Ocean, whereas the Limited qualification only requires Yachtmaster Offshore.

These qualifications are becoming the norm within the workboat sector of the UK and Europe, with employers seeking them over RYA Yachtmaster. Below are the requirements for each:

  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques*
  • STCW PSSR
  • STCW Fire Fighting & Fire Prevention*
  • STCW Elementary First Aid
  • STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness
  • HELM (Operational Level)
  • RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
  • 6 months of seagoing service while holding RYA Yachtmaster Offshore CoC
  • STCW GMDSS ROC (Restricted Operator Certificate)
  • Notice of Eligibility from the MCA
