We advise that when you buy a boat for use on the sea a radio should be included in the package - just in case it all goes wrong! Radio's are so cheap now that there is no excuse for going to sea without one.

With a vhf radio you can talk to other boats, the Coastguard etc and often a minor mishap can be prevented from turning into a major distress alert by simply talking to people over the radio. With vhf the coastguard and lifeboats can find you even when you do not know where you are by homing in onto your radio signal.  

You must know how to use the radio and the operators certificate is a legal requirement. We are practical users of vhf during the boat courses and in our respective rescue roles. This course covers practical use of vhf for everyday boat to boat calling, calling the coastguard, and urgency/distress calling. 

Also covered is the new generation of vhf radios incorporating digital selective calling to other vessels and push button distress calling - one push of the button and your position, identity, and nature of distress is sent in a one digital burst. All our boats have DSC vhf radio.
